A practical guide to living in Messina

Distinguish Catania coaches from city transport, find municipal help when the online desk fails, and access health and waste services in Messina. Local sources and routes, with identified limitations.

Plan the journey in two stages

Write down the journey to Messina separately from the city leg to your accommodation. Catania airport lists regional operators, while ATM covers transport within Messina. Before comparing a ticket, check its final stop and then plan the local bus or walking connection. Arriving in the city does not necessarily mean arriving near your address.

ATM MovUp and service changes

ATM presents ATM MovUp for routes, timetables and journey planning. Its website separates bus and tram notices; check them before travelling, particularly during replacement ST services. ATM also lists ticket offices and machines, including Cavallotti and Stazione Centrale.

The app information page still describes real-time arrivals as a future feature. This guide therefore does not promise live tracking of every vehicle. Check what information your route actually provides.

Catania: SAIS Autolinee for Messina

On the airport’s “Bus” page, find SAIS Autolinee, which lists Messina among its destinations. SAIS Trasporti and Alibus appear separately with other routes. Open the correct operator to check your date, stop, luggage and ticket. Catania Alibus times are not the timetable for a coach to Messina.

Anagrafe: find the route for your move

Servizio Anagrafe — Stato Civile handles residence changes and registration of foreign residents. Its page lists Palazzo Zanca, Piazza Unione Europea, and switchboard 090 7721. Before visiting, explain whether you are moving from abroad or another municipality and request the procedure and attachments for your case.

On 14 September 2026, the municipality’s linked Sportello Telematico could not be opened. Use “Richiedi Assistenza” or the telephone to confirm an alternative; attempting to open a page is not submission of a declaration. The linked national chapter explains residence in general.

TARI billing and collection are separate services

The Servizio Gestione Tariffa Rifiuti Solidi Urbani page lists Ufficio Tributi at viale San Martino 234 and 800 042222. Use this contact for questions about your tax account, declaration or TARI notice. Physical collection is handled by Messinaservizi, covered in the waste chapter.

Before taking a property, gather the full address, occupancy date and expenses included in the contract. Ask the tax office which information and deadline apply to your declaration; this guide does not estimate the tax from the rent.

Use the individual shop page

Lidl’s locator confirms a shop at Strada Statale 114, km 4+400, Messina 98145. Open its page for the location and the operator’s opening information. This is a verifiable reference for planning groceries; Brazilian products, delivery and prices have not been confirmed.

Compare the address with your home or work route. Search results containing “Messina” as a street name may refer to another municipality; check the town and postcode before travelling.

Changing doctor and support for foreign residents

ASP’s “Scelta e revoca” service is for people already registered in the health registry of Messina and its province. Its page provides “Accedi al Servizio” and documents for moving from another region or choosing a first paediatrician. Select your situation; changing doctor online does not establish eligibility for initial registration.

For foreign residents’ guidance, ASP’s home page links to Ufficio Stranieri. There, expand Messina under administrative offices to locate STP/ENI issuance; the general Milazzo contact is not automatically your desk. Confirm eligibility and access directly with ASP.

School meals and financial support need separate requests

“Educazione e formazione” separates school meal enrolment from assistance with its cost. On 14 September 2026, the highlighted contribution still referred to 2025/26 and the page described digital services as being introduced. This does not confirm open applications for 2026/27.

Ask the school and municipal assistance service for the procedure matching the year and school stage. The linked submission portal did not open during this review; completing an application through it has not been verified.

Area calendars and access to collection centres

On Messinaservizi, choose Porta a Porta → Utenze domestiche and search your street, or select Area Nord, Centro or Sud. Use the household category; businesses have separate schedules. The site also offers collection requests for ingombranti, RAEE, sfalci e potature.

The notice dated 13 September 2026 restores ordinary opening hours from the 14th. Gravitelli and Maregrosso have H24 centres requiring an access card. Check how to request it on the official page and read closure notices before taking items.

Parking: select the right permit

ATM’s “ZTL — Strisce blu” page concerns paid parking and distinguishes first and second resident passes, plus electric and hybrid permits. Vehicle discounts require the corresponding pass, not simply an electric or hybrid engine.

Applications start at Servizi Online → Permessi ZTL; the page also lists the Front Office at via La Farina 336. Check the category and current documents before paying. National driving and equipment rules are in the linked chapter.

Month-by-month climate and wetter periods

In this historical reference, the three months with the highest estimated precipitation are December, November, October. Values below show average air temperature and approximate monthly precipitation. They are neither maximum/minimum temperatures nor a forecast for next year.

  • January: 11.2 °C · 80 mm
  • February: 10.9 °C · 73 mm
  • March: 12.6 °C · 62 mm
  • April: 14.9 °C · 44 mm
  • May: 18.6 °C · 24 mm
  • June: 23.3 °C · 20 mm
  • July: 26.5 °C · 12 mm
  • August: 27.0 °C · 17 mm
  • September: 23.8 °C · 64 mm
  • October: 20.4 °C · 82 mm
  • November: 16.4 °C · 94 mm
  • December: 12.8 °C · 95 mm

Method: NASA POWER, 2001–2020 climatology at a city reference point; T2M in °C and PRECTOTCORR in mm/day multiplied by days in each month (February: 28.25). Rounded gridded MERRA-2-derived estimates, not observations at a neighbourhood station. Terrain, urban heat and distance from the sea can change local conditions.

Use the figures to compare ventilation, insulation and heating. Plan rain protection in wetter periods and shaded routes with drinking water in heat. For specific dates, use forecasts and Protezione Civile/municipal alerts. Monthly averages cannot predict a storm, flood or heatwave.

Ask for specific help when a portal fails

The municipal “Richiedi Assistenza” form asks for a category, service and description, plus the applicant’s contact details. Explain the procedure you tried to access and the error. The form can be viewed publicly; submission on behalf of a resident was not tested.

Keep the reference or confirmation for any procedure you actually complete. To correct this guide, send MyCommunity.Living the URL and a current source. Italian service names are retained so you can find them on official pages.
