A practical guide to living in Italy

Start with your reason for moving, citizenship and intended length of stay. In Visa for Italy, select nationality, country of residence, purpose and duration. Visa-free short visits do not automatically permit employment or permanent relocation. Brazilian passport holders must check those conditions; people who also hold EU citizenship should assess the EU citizen route.

EU citizens staying beyond three months may need registration and evidence of the applicable situation, such as employment, study or resources and health coverage. Non-EU citizens should confirm the appropriate visa before travelling and the permesso di soggiorno procedure after entry. A visa issued abroad and a residence permit issued in Italy are different documents.

Organise your passport, family certificates, qualifications, school records, prescriptions and financial evidence. Ask each receiving authority whether translation, an apostille or legalisation is required; a document accepted by a university may face different requirements at the municipality.

Where a permesso di soggiorno is required, the application must be submitted within eight working days of entry. The channel depends on the category: many applications use the kit at authorised post offices; others go directly through the Questura or a specific procedure. Keep receipts and appointment notices. A receipt does not by itself create every work or travel entitlement: check the rules for your category.

Residenza anagrafica is the municipal registration of your habitual home. It is distinct from citizenship, a visa, a hotel address and tax residence. Check evidence of accommodation, your municipality’s process and any address checks. Put your name on the doorbell and letterbox to receive official correspondence.

Keep a folder recording each application number, filing date, expiry and next action. When moving home, update the relevant authorities and contracts. Ask a public immigration help desk or qualified professional about your category before a deadline expires.

The codice fiscale is the tax identifier used in contracts and services. Obtain or confirm its assignment through the relevant Agenzia delle Entrate channels; a code calculated on a website does not replace the official record. Check name spelling and dates across your documents to prevent incompatible records.

CIE is the electronic identity card issued by the municipality to eligible applicants; for foreigners it does not replace a passport or residence permit. Store the PIN and PUK separately. SPID is a digital identity provided by accredited operators: a residence permit alone is insufficient for a foreign resident to activate it. Check accepted Italian identity documents, tax code, phone, email and identification method.

The IO app brings together messages and services from participating administrations, using SPID or CIE login. It does not contain every municipal service. ANPR provides registration and residence services available to your profile. If you cannot yet sign in digitally, use the in-person service desk; do not give an intermediary your password.

Use Idealista and Immobiliare.it to compare properties, filters and private or agency listings. They are commercial platforms, not authorities guaranteeing every listing’s legality. Save area searches and distinguish stanza (room), monolocale (studio) and bilocale (usually a living room and one bedroom). View the property, confirm who is entitled to rent it out and obtain written terms before sending money.

Budget separately for canone (rent), spese condominiali (building charges), heating, utilities, deposit and any agency fee. Ask whether heating is central or independent, whether building charges have an annual adjustment, the energy rating and which furnishings remain. Photograph defects and meter readings at handover.

Understand the contract: market-rate 4+4, agreed-rent 3+2, temporary and student contracts have different purposes and conditions. Contracts requiring registration generally must be registered within 30 days; short lettings have exceptions. Request a signed copy and registration receipt. Read notice periods, termination, maintenance and deposit-return conditions. Do not assume a tourist letting automatically provides a route to residence registration.

Before contracting energy, establish whether the supply is active. Voltura changes the holder of an active contract; subentro reactivates a disconnected supply. Record the electricity POD, gas PDR and meter readings with the owner. Compare energy prices, standing charges, taxes, duration and terms in Portale Offerte; a low monthly instalment may be an estimate.

Ask whether water and heating are included in building charges. Budget separately for TARI, the municipal waste charge, which may require its own declaration after moving. Waste collection schedules and payment of the charge are separate matters.

For fixed internet, check your exact address rather than just the city. FTTH, FTTC and mobile access use different technologies; confirm installation, router, minimum term and exit costs. For a SIM or eSIM, check accepted documents, identity verification, device compatibility and included data and calls. A travel roaming offer may not suit permanent use. Keep contracts and verify the supplier’s identity before agreeing to a switch by phone.

Eligibility for the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) depends on your circumstances, not simply an address. Ask the local ASL/ATS/ULSS whether registration is compulsory, voluntary or whether another form of coverage applies to your reason for staying. Bring identification, tax code, residence/immigration documents and evidence required for your category. The tessera sanitaria identifies the user; possession of the card alone does not establish eligibility or current coverage.

After registration, choose an available medico di medicina generale and, for eligible children, a pediatra di libera scelta. Public specialist care generally involves a referral/impegnativa and booking through CUP. Check urgency, ticket (co-payment), any exemption and cancellation rules. Private and SSN-contracted appointments at the same clinic may have different conditions.

During temporary stays, TEAM/EHIC covers necessary care under public-system conditions for eligible holders; it is neither comprehensive travel insurance nor a permanent-relocation solution. Brazilians should check whether a bilateral arrangement applies to them personally: nationality alone does not guarantee free treatment. Bring prescriptions showing active ingredients and ask a doctor or pharmacy about availability in Italy.

Call 112 in an emergency. Give the exact location first, what happened, how many people need help and a callback number; follow the operator’s instructions. Emergency departments are not a substitute for routine appointments. For needs outside your doctor’s hours, check the local health authority’s continuità assistenziale; contact routes and hours vary.

Save your full home and work addresses in Italian, allergies and essential medicines. Learn how to shut off water, electricity and gas safely; if a leak is suspected, move away and contact the appropriate service. Check Protezione Civile warnings before travelling during storms, extreme heat or snow. Local risk bulletins matter more for a journey decision than the guide’s climate averages.

Before accepting work, confirm whether your immigration category permits the activity and under what conditions. Request a contract and identify the employer. Distinguish gross salary, estimated take-home pay, hours, probation, CCNL (collective agreement), leave and contributions. Keep buste paga (payslips) and receipts. For regulated professions, check qualification recognition before practising.

When opening an account, ask which identity, residence-permit, tax-code and address documents are accepted. Compare annual costs, withdrawals, transfers, card and support. The conto di base provides essential payment services subject to legal eligibility; it does not automatically include credit. If a bank rejects documents, ask why and how to request a review.

Self-employment may require a partita IVA, registration and contributions depending on the activity. Consult a commercialista before issuing your first invoice. CAF and patronato assist with particular procedures but do not replace every form of tax, employment or immigration advice. Receiving money from abroad does not automatically remove Italian obligations.

Tax residence must be assessed separately from visas and municipal registration, taking domestic rules, personal ties and any double-tax treaty into account. Before your first tax year, organise moving dates, contracts, income, accounts and assets in each country. Do not use an informal day-count rule as a universal answer or assume Italian citizenship removes obligations in your country of origin.

ISEE is a household economic indicator used for various benefits and fees. It is not simply monthly salary. The DSU declaration may involve household composition, income and assets, including abroad, under the applicable rules. Ask CAF/INPS for the document list and reference period; do not declare zero merely because you lack an Italian document.

Brazilians should obtain advice on Comunicação and Declaração de Saída Definitiva, continuing income and Brazilian accounts. Treatment depends on when and how departure occurred and the ties maintained. Planning also helps prevent contradictory information being supplied to banks and authorities in the two countries.

Distinguish nido (early childcare), scuola dell’infanzia, primaria and the secondary cycles. Childcare, meals and school transport usually have separate municipal applications and criteria; school enrolment does not automatically activate every service. Check the municipal calendar and contact the school with the child’s address, age and needs.

Foreign children have a right to education; lack of regular immigration documents should not prevent enrolment. If arriving during the school year, contact the school office directly with records, available documents, contact details and vaccination information. The school assesses placement, generally using age as a reference alongside educational criteria. Ask about Italian-language support and communication with guardians.

For higher education, check entry and qualification-recognition requirements directly with the institution. Adults can look for CPIA education and Italian courses. Coordinate healthcare, school and journeys when choosing a home, rather than considering rent alone.

Conad, Coop, Lidl and Esselunga are examples of chains with official store finders; presence, store format and delivery vary by city and postcode. See the city guide for confirmed examples. Compare the price per kilogram or litre, not just pack size. A volantino is an offers leaflet; some promotions require a loyalty card and do not apply in every branch.

Plan the first shop around cleaning items, bedding, compatible adapters and food for the first days. Check hours and collection/consegna for your address before filling an online basket. For Brazilian ingredients, specialist shops and restaurants, ask the ambassador for additional suggestions: availability and personal opinion should remain separate from essential services and official rules.

Raccolta differenziata sorts waste according to municipal rules. Bin colour, bags, collection times and accepted materials may differ between cities. Use the official tool for your address; furniture, electronics and medicines need dedicated channels. Photograph the collection calendar and share it with everyone at home.

Start with the city’s official operator and test the whole journey to work, school and station. A mapping app may suggest a route without selling the correct ticket. Urban, regional, airport and high-speed products may belong to different systems. Read coverage, zones, validity and change rules before buying a pass.

Purchase does not always mean validation. Check whether your product needs on-screen activation, card tapping, a validator or a ticket tied to a specific date and train. Keep the same card/device used for contactless payment for inspection; entry and exit rules vary. On rail journeys, check station names because a city may have several.

Use official apps such as Trenitalia for the services they sell and the city guide for other operators. Before a flight, check first/last departures, baggage, accessibility and engineering works. Do not assume an urban ticket includes the airport or that all operators accept the same pass.

For a licence issued outside the EU/EEA, MIT allows driving the authorised categories for up to one year after acquiring residence in Italy, with a valid licence accompanied by an IDP from the issuing country or an official Italian translation. The IDP must accompany the original licence; it is not a standalone driving entitlement. Its printed expiry does not extend the one-year limit after residence. Arrival as a visitor and acquisition of residence are different milestones.

After the first year, you need an entitlement valid under Italian rules: conversion if eligible, or a licence obtained by examination. A longer conversion-application deadline does not authorise you to keep driving while waiting. Start early and confirm your residence date and documents with Motorizzazione.

EU/EEA licences follow a different regime: they are generally recognised until an expiry consistent with EU rules; licences without an expiry or with excessive validity have a specific conversion requirement after two years of residence. Also check restrictions, suspensions and EU documents originating from conversion of non-EU licences. The issuing document matters, not simply your nationality.

The Italy–Brazil agreement took effect on 28 April 2025 and MIT lists it as valid until 28 April 2030. Circular 10384/2025 requires a valid CNH and less than six years of Italian registered residence when applying. At six years or more, conversion under this agreement does not apply. The CNH must have been obtained before Italian residence; documents resulting from conversion of a foreign licence that is not convertible in Italy are excluded.

Check the models and categories in the annexes: do not assume every professional category transfers. Motorizzazione requires the standard application documents, medical fitness, the applicable minimum age and an official translation, alongside checks between authorities. Under the agreement’s procedure, the original is surrendered when exchanged for the Italian licence.

The six years are an application condition, not six years of permission to drive with a CNH/IDP. The post-residence driving limit remains the one explained in the previous chapter. Consult the current circular and annexes when applying; older pages about the agreement that ended in 2023 do not describe today’s regime.

If your document cannot be converted, plan the licence process through Motorizzazione or an autoscuola. Category B involves residence and age requirements, medical assessment, application, theory examination, learner authorisation (foglio rosa), practical preparation and a driving test. Experience abroad does not itself waive these stages.

Ask for an itemised quote covering public fees, medical assessment, lessons, materials, test presentation and retakes. Confirm the languages actually offered for the examination; do not rely on Portuguese or Spanish without official confirmation. Learn Italian vocabulary for signs and driving situations even when using study support in another language.

A foglio rosa is not a full licence: practice and accompanying-driver conditions apply. After passing, check current neopatentati rules, including vehicle restrictions. Confirm requirements at application time because procedures and rules can change.

RC Auto is compulsory vehicle third-party liability insurance in the circumstances defined by law. It covers liability for damage to others within policy limits and conditions; it is not comprehensive cover for your car or injuries to an at-fault driver. Do not assume parking on private land automatically removes the obligation: suspension and exceptions must follow the applicable rules.

Kasko is optional cover for damage to your own vehicle, with scope defined by contract. Collision, leaving the road or overturning may be included depending on the product; mini-Kasko can be narrower. Theft, fire, glass, natural events, vandalism, assistance, legal expenses and driver injury may be separate guarantees. The word “comprehensive” does not replace reading exclusions.

Compare massimale (limit), franchigia (fixed excess), scoperto (percentage excess), insured value and repair-shop conditions. Read named/experienced-driver terms, age, valid-licence and alcohol clauses and rivalsa provisions, under which the insurer recovers money after compensating a third party. Request the information document and full conditions, including foreign-travel rules, before buying.

Before buying used, check ownership, encumbrances, maintenance and inspection history, chassis number and documents. Passaggio di proprietà transfers ownership; agree who handles it and which costs are included. Documento Unico combines circulation and ownership information in the cases covered. Keep the contract and receipts.

For an ordinary private passenger car, the first revisione is required four years after first registration and then every two years, observing the relevant month; special-use vehicles may follow a different schedule. Statutory inspection does not replace maintenance. Bollo auto is a vehicle tax with regional responsibilities and rules; check due dates, power, class and possible exemptions officially, not only with the seller.

Bringing a foreign vehicle requires a separate assessment of registration, owner/user residence, permitted use period, taxes and any specific registrations. Do not apply the driving-licence one-year limit to foreign plates. Before shipping the car, obtain the documents and costs applicable to your situation from ACI/Motorizzazione.

Winter-tyre or chain obligations come from orders issued by road authorities, with defined roads and signs. The national directive normally uses 15 November to 15 April but allows different local circumstances and periods. This does not create an identical obligation on every Italian street. Check your route and ensure approved suitable tyres or compatible onboard devices meet the relevant order.

An “all season” tyre meets the requirement only if its markings and characteristics qualify. Check dimensions, load/speed ratings and out-of-season use against the vehicle documents with a professional. Carrying chains is insufficient if they do not fit; learn to install them before travelling.

A ZTL is a limited-traffic zone, potentially with cameras, operating hours, authorised categories and plate registration. Paying for parking does not authorise entry through a ZTL. Check low-emission areas, vehicle rules and moving/loading permits too. Blue lines generally indicate paid parking, but local signs determine hours and conditions; white or yellow spaces may also carry restrictions or reservations. Italy has no single climate: altitude, coastline and terrain change rainfall, heat and cold. City guides show all twelve months with historical data and methodology. Use averages to plan clothing and housing; use forecasts and warnings to decide trips. During viewings, check insulation, ventilation and heating as well as wet-weather journeys.

Learn service-desk vocabulary: appuntamento means appointment, sportello is the desk, ricevuta a receipt and scadenza a deadline. Check opening hours and documents before leaving home. Read building rules on noise, shared areas and waste. Respect queues and appointments; cancel through the stated channel if you cannot attend.

In the first days, prioritise safe housing, immigration status, healthcare access and transport. Then organise digital identity, school, contracts and budget. Ambassadors can add restaurants, specialist shops, activities and neighbourhood experience. Keep these as personal recommendations while official rules retain sources and review dates.
