Guides for your new life

A practical guide to living in Roma

Prepare for everyday life in Roma, Lazio: transport, official apps, housing, health, schools, shopping, waste and month-by-month climate. Use this alongside the Italy guide; the ambassador can add personal neighbourhood recommendations.

Understand the city before choosing a neighbourhood

Rome is extensive: compare daily life by door-to-door time rather than map distance. Termini, Tiburtina and Ostiense are different hubs; choose a station with the final destination in mind.

Roma is in Lazio. The Comune manages municipal services, regional authorities organise parts of healthcare, and entry, driving-licence and insurance rules are explained in the Italy guide. This division helps you find the right office rather than searching a transport app for a municipal procedure.

Make a practical visit: test return journeys to work, shops, schools and the station on a weekday. Check lifts, pavements, lighting and a backup if the main route stops. Listing distances and property photos do not show the whole routine.

Transport and local app

ATAC covers metro, buses and trams. Check its official sales channels and Tap&Go; read integrated-ticket coverage for the specific product.

Before the first journey, open the official directory link, check its app-store links and choose a ticket for your route. Check whether an account, wallet top-up or associated card is needed. For discounted passes, verify the category, residence/age and documents; a resident fare does not automatically apply to visitors.

Read the product’s validation instructions: on-screen activation, tapping or a validator may be separate from purchase. Keep your phone charged and ticket available for inspection. Check engineering work, strikes and accessibility notices before important appointments.

Airports and intercity travel

For Fiumicino, compare Leonardo Express to Termini and regional trains serving other stations; Ciampino has its own bus connections. Use ADR to distinguish the airports and confirm the route.

When arriving with luggage, allow time for disembarking, purchase/validation, walking and the final connection. Check travel day/direction, reservations, extra baggage and time limits. Use the airport and station’s full names. If a flight is delayed, check the last departure and an official alternative before arrival.

No fixed fare or frequency is quoted because those depend on the product and operating calendar. The official links below are the reference for your actual travel date.

Municipality, residence and digital services

Use the Comune di Roma portal below. Start with Anagrafe, cambio di residenza, carta d’identità, tributi and servizi scolastici. Check the responsible desk, appointment and documents before visiting. Digital identity unlocks personal services only when you meet their requirements.

A city does not need its own app to provide online services: the municipal portal is the reference. Milan’s directory highlights Fascicolo del cittadino; elsewhere we use the confirmed municipal channel without assigning an unverified app. Also see ANPR and IO in the national guide.

Keep each application number and deadline. If you lack SPID/CIE or a form rejects foreign documents, ask for the appropriate in-person alternative. National immigration deadlines remain separate from local registration.

Finding housing and setting up utilities

Idealista and Immobiliare.it let you search Roma; check municipal boundaries and filter residential lets, rooms or whole properties. Compare similar listings and request total costs including building charges and heating. An address outside Roma can change the municipality, transport fare and responsible health service.

Before signing, view the home and confirm contract registration, exit terms, deposit, commission, furnishings and the residence-registration procedure. Test mobile reception and check internet coverage by building number. Read the national housing chapter for 4+4, 3+2 and temporary contracts.

At handover, record meters, electricity/gas/water account holders and the building manager’s contact. Ask about TARI and the municipal declaration. Do not send deposits just to “unlock a viewing” without checking the advertiser and terms.

Supermarkets and the first week’s shopping

Conad has documented local presence in the linked source. Use the official finder to choose an address, check hours and compare services. This is a confirmed example, not an exhaustive or sponsored recommendation. Local presence does not guarantee delivery to your postcode.

Compare unit prices and travel costs. Check loyalty-card conditions and whether online shopping offers delivery or collection. For the first days, prioritise basic food, cleaning and items missing from the home; where there are many stairs, plan a load you can carry.

For Brazilian ingredients, other community shops and restaurants, the ambassador can add businesses and personal experience. Ask for address, visit date and current availability to make suggestions useful.

Local healthcare: registration, doctor and appointments

The listed territorial reference is ASL Roma (distretto secondo indirizzo). Open the official site and look for iscrizione al SSN, scelta/revoca del medico and CUP. The responsible unit can depend on address and regional organisation; where ATS and ASST coexist, confirm which desk handles registration.

Bring identity, tax code and the immigration/coverage evidence required for your category. The national guide explains resident, EU visitor and non-EU differences. Living in the municipality does not itself guarantee free registration. Then confirm an available doctor, paediatrician where applicable and prescriptions.

For specialists, check referral, urgency, co-payment and cancellation. Consult local continuità assistenziale and duty-pharmacy information outside normal hours. In an emergency call 112 with the exact location; emergency care does not replace registration and routine appointments.

Schools, childcare and family support

On the Roma portal, look for nidi, servizi scolastici, mensa and trasporto scolastico. Age and address help identify the appropriate school/service. Childcare, meals and transport can have separate applications and fees; check the calendar and ISEE when requested.

If arriving mid-year, contact the school office directly with records and available documents. Ask about Italian support, guardian communication and vaccination procedures. The national chapter explains foreign children’s education rights and enrolment guidance.

Test the school journey at drop-off and collection times. Ask about before/after-school care, closure days and authorised collection. Adults can look for CPIA and municipal language initiatives; confirm places and dates with the provider.

Waste collection and TARI

AMA is the listed starting point for local information. Search your address/zone and obtain the raccolta differenziata calendar. Confirm materials, bags/bins, collection location and putting-out times. Do not copy another city’s bin colours: paper, packaging, glass, organics and residual waste may use different combinations.

Ask the owner where shared bins are and who provides access cards/keys where applicable. For furniture, mattresses and electronics, check ingombranti collection or a centro di raccolta before leaving items outside. Medicines and batteries should use the operator’s designated points.

TARI is the waste charge and can require a separate occupancy declaration. Check with Comune/operator who must declare, documents, floor area and occupants; building membership does not itself establish tax registration.

Cars, restrictions and parking

Rome’s ZTL areas have distinct sectors and schedules. Check the address sector with Roma Mobilità and confirm moving-vehicle access before booking delivery.

Before buying or bringing a car, read the national chapters on licences/IDP, conversion, RC Auto, Kasko, registration, revisione and bollo. The foreign-licence deadline is not the rule for foreign plates. Brazilian CNH conversion conditions are maintained once in the Italy guide.

For winter routes, check the order issued by each road authority. We do not claim a single tyre obligation across the municipality: urban, provincial and motorway roads can differ. Check plate, environmental class and permits before entering controlled areas; parking hours and circulation authorisation are separate.

Method: NASA POWER, 2001–2020 climatology at a city reference point; T2M in °C and PRECTOTCORR in mm/day multiplied by days in each month (February: 28.25). Rounded gridded MERRA-2-derived estimates, not observations at a neighbourhood station. Terrain, urban heat and distance from the sea can change local conditions.

Use the figures to compare ventilation, insulation and heating. Plan rain protection in wetter periods and shaded routes with drinking water in heat. For specific dates, use forecasts and Protezione Civile/municipal alerts. Monthly averages cannot predict a storm, flood or heatwave.

Your first steps and the ambassador’s contribution

In the first week, test transport, locate shops and a pharmacy, and organise immigration, residence and health applications around your personal deadlines. Then check schools, contracts, TARI and digital identity. Use the site’s moving plan to track tasks and national chapters to understand rules.

An ambassador, when available, can suggest restaurants, specialist shops, activities and neighbourhood details absent from public portals. Ask who a suggestion suits, its address, observed price and date. Personal experience complements the guide but does not establish immigration, tax or traffic rules.

Italian authority and app names are retained to help searches. Explanations are translated; official sources may open in Italian. Check the stated dates and flag changes when reviewing the guide.
