A practical guide to living in Milano

Plan arrival in Milano with Mi1–Mi3 limits, night M2 changes, airports, foreign residence registration, Milano Abitare, health desks and nursery places with defined deadlines and eligibility.

M2 at night: check the return trip before choosing an address

Until 3 October 2026, ATM lists the last Cascina Gobba departure towards the centre at 00:16. The 00:08 Gessate train terminates at Lambrate; the notice directs passengers to NM2, boarding towards the centre on via Antonio Salieri.

This may matter if you finish work late. When comparing homes along M2, plan the return at your actual time, including the bus connection. The same journey may look simple during a daytime viewing. Check the date’s notices and route direction before assuming an address near the metro has the same connection all night.

Mi1–Mi3: single and daily tickets for different needs

The €2.20 ticket lasts 90 minutes and permits metro exit and re-entry during validity. A daily costs €7.60 and lasts 24 hours. On M2 towards Gessate, Mi1–Mi3 reaches only Cascina Burrona; beyond it, a different fare is required.

Write down full origin and destination before buying, especially if living outside the municipality. For a day of property viewings, count separate trips and compare the cost with a daily. Municipal and fare boundaries are different. In a group, each person needs a valid ticket; a carnet cannot serve several passengers simultaneously.

Linate uses M4; Malpensa has a separate rail ticket

For Linate, M4 accepts the €2.20 Mi1–Mi3 ticket; ATM gives 12 minutes between the centre and the airport. For Malpensa, an adult Milano–airport ticket costs €15. Choose the correct station, direction and terminal; the digital ticket lasts on the selected day until service ends.

Check whether your flight says LIN, MXP or BGY before planning: these codes are different places. Reaching the centre does not include the final leg to accommodation. For Linate after metro hours, check NM4 and its stops; the train journey time does not describe the night bus. Allow for changing vehicles and walking with luggage.

Arriving from abroad: use the dedicated municipal request

Milano has a dedicated service for foreign nationals arriving from abroad, updated in July 2026. Download forms and document instructions first, then use Richiedi. Its instructions require attachments through the online procedure and say emailed files will not be considered.

The ordinary change service, directed to ANPR with SPID/CIE, describes domestic moves and other specified cases; it does not automatically replace first registration for foreign arrivals. Organise general paperwork with the Italy guide and read the case matching nationality and circumstances. The dedicated form provides a summary email followed by a reference number. Keep both and use its listed support if a technical problem occurs.

Milano Abitare: free guidance and an appointment-only office

Milano Abitare offers free guidance on affordable renting. Current contacts are info@milanoabitare.org and 02 0070 7160; visits are by appointment at via Felice Orsini 21, Villa Scheibler. Phone hours are Monday 14:00–16:00, Tuesday 09:00–13:00, Wednesday 09:00–11:00 and Thursday 09:00–12:00.

Explain whether you need a property, information about canone concordato or guidance on support. The agency does not guarantee a home for arrival. Before choosing a contract, compare rent, building charges, energy and monthly commuting. If an offer depends on public support, check the call and eligibility before counting it in your budget.

Via Morgantini: in-store shopping and delivery have different conditions

Esselunga at via Morgantini 15 lists 02 40091995, Monday–Saturday 07:30–21:00 and Sunday 08:00–20:00. Its page includes home delivery, open parking and used-battery collection. Confirm delivery conditions for your address before building a basket.

For the first week, list what fits your accommodation and return transport. A department’s existence does not prove a specific product is in stock; ask the store. When comparing shops, include delivery charges and available slots rather than considering one item’s price alone.

Scelta e Revoca: check whether your case can be handled online

The Doria office reopened at viale Andrea Doria 52 on 4 May 2026. When a procedure cannot be completed online, the page directs appointment booking through ZeroCoda, searching Scelta/Revoca/Cambio del Medico and Milano. Questions: sceltarevoca.info@asst-fbf-sacco.it. Other desks are listed.

The joint ASST portal serves residents and people domiciled in all nine Municipi. Options distinguish first registration, renewal and changing doctors; first registration for Italian citizens should not be treated as the equivalent for any foreign applicant. Read the relevant category and seek guidance if none matches. Doctor capacity is confirmed by the service, not this guide.

New September places: only for families already waiting

The current page says applications closed on 10 July 2026. Enrolled families still awaiting a place may request one by 18 September at ed.infanziaiscrizioni@comune.milano.it, choosing at most two age-compatible centres from Elenco nuovi posti disponibili. This is not general registration for new arrivals.

Read the updated notice before submitting. Use Geoschool to locate centres and compare travel with work and home, but check the centre against the specific vacancy list. If you have not applied, ask the service about the next option for your circumstances. Arrange alternative childcare until confirmation; emailing a request does not guarantee allocation.

AMSA: book collection and respect size, weight and timing

Free street-level bulky collection requires booking: each piece is limited to 2.5 m and 50 kg, with one reservation every 30 days. The platform also checks aggregate limits. Put items at the confirmed address and time without blocking passage; collection from your floor is paid.

Before dismantling furniture, compare its dimensions with service conditions and confirm the material category. CRT televisions have a separate paid option. During a move, coordinate collection with key handover: leaving objects outside without the relevant booking is different from using the service. Agree building access and ordinary waste arrangements with the condominium.

Area B and Area C: permission and payment need separate checks

Area B runs Monday–Friday 07:30–19:30, excluding holidays; admitted vehicles do not pay. Area C lists the same hours and requires a ticket depending on classification. Each page offers plate checks. An Area C purchase must be followed by activation linking PIN and plate.

Before driving, check both zones and the vehicle’s prohibition calendar. Paying Area C does not remove emissions restrictions or authorise every reserved lane. For a garage or move, request a route respecting all access points. Read activation instructions and keep confirmation; this guide does not replace the current result for your vehicle.

Month-by-month climate and wetter periods

In this historical reference, the three months with the highest estimated precipitation are November, May, October. Values below show average air temperature and approximate monthly precipitation. They are neither maximum/minimum temperatures nor a forecast for next year.

  • January: 2.7 °C · 47 mm
  • February: 4.4 °C · 62 mm
  • March: 8.6 °C · 64 mm
  • April: 12.8 °C · 87 mm
  • May: 17.2 °C · 106 mm
  • June: 21.7 °C · 81 mm
  • July: 24.1 °C · 68 mm
  • August: 23.7 °C · 89 mm
  • September: 19.1 °C · 80 mm
  • October: 13.9 °C · 95 mm
  • November: 8.3 °C · 137 mm
  • December: 3.6 °C · 69 mm

Method: NASA POWER, 2001–2020 climatology at a city reference point; T2M in °C and PRECTOTCORR in mm/day multiplied by days in each month (February: 28.25). Rounded gridded MERRA-2-derived estimates, not observations at a neighbourhood station. Terrain, urban heat and distance from the sea can change local conditions.

Use the figures to compare ventilation, insulation and heating. Plan rain protection in wetter periods and shaded routes with drinking water in heat. For specific dates, use forecasts and Protezione Civile/municipal alerts. Monthly averages cannot predict a storm, flood or heatwave.

020202: Italian and English support until 18:00

The current municipal page lists 020202 telephone support Monday–Saturday 08:00–18:00, excluding Sundays and holidays, in Italian and English. A WhatsApp virtual assistant uses the same number. Choose the appropriate channel to identify the service and application stage.

For residence questions, state whether you arrive from abroad or another municipality; for childcare, say whether you already applied. These distinctions help avoid an unsuitable route. Note the suggested page and contact without treating initial guidance as approval. If a guide detail becomes outdated, send the official source and date for correction.
